Baba's Ethical Decisions

Now that you know of Baba's fatherhood of Hassan, write about his ethical decision to keep this information from Amir. What are the complications? What are the "levels of right"?

i think it was a good idea because if baba had known it really could of hurt him. and as his father he defintely had a right to keep this imformation from him, because he was just trying to protect him.

Baba couldnt tell Amir, and it wasn't necessarily for Amir's sake. If people were to find out about Baba and a Hazara women he would lose his reputation and power. Amir though could of benefited from Baba telling him. Amir most likely would have been more protective and helpful to Hassan when he needed him. I don't think Amir would have been so selfish if he would of known. As we discussed in class it puts everything into perspective and how Baba treated Hasan and why. I believe though it would have been better to keep from Amir the whole time even as he got older, because as they said about Sanubar sometimes its better to not know then know and lose something. Which is what happened to Amir after finding out about his brother.

His choice to keep this huge secret from Amir was probably for his own sake and for Ali's honor because like they say in the book, people in Kabul love to talk about gossip and if the people knew that Baba gave his son Ali then that would show dishonor on his whole family and embarrass them for the rest of there lives. I think it was right to keep it a secret when Hassan and Amir were young but i think that when they got the right age it would be appropriate to tell them. When they had to move to America that complicated things with Baba because he no longer had any communication with Hassan and he would probably want to tell them both.

I think when Baba decided to keep the information away from Amir that yeah maybe he did it to try to protect. But i also believe the fact that Baba died and still went without telling him and now that he is 38 years old and just now finding out i believe that it was wrong. I think since he was trying to protect him from whatever happend in Kabul that there move to America could have been the time and place for him to tell him the story about his life instead of holding it away from him.

I think telling Amir the truth was up to Baba. However, Baba did not have to be a hypocrite. He should not have told Amir about the greatest sin, when he was the one who kept the truth from Amir. All these years, Amir felt bad for his sin (taking his mother's life), and struggled to win Baba, and this is the truth that he gets?

The complication would be more on the tribe side. As we all know, Hassan was half HAzara, so Amir childhood would be disturbed if the truth was out. Therefore, the Baba had the entire right to keep the secret for himself to protect him.

Too me, its obvious why Baba didn't share his secret with Amir. If Baba had made the decision to tell Amir that he and Hassan were brothers- his reputation and everything he had worked hard to create could have been jeopardized. He had to much to risk. Although I understand Baba's reasoning for not telling Amir- it doesn't make it right. Ethically, I think the right decision would have been to tell Amir the truth- it could have made a HUGE difference in the way Amir treated Hassan and the way Hassans life ended.

I can't think of any reason whatsoever as to why Baba should have kept that information from Amir. I don't see how it would have changed anything between them, they had a brotherly relationship to begin with. If Amir knew, I think he would have treated Hassan with more respect and there is a possibility it could have prevented him from not doing anything while Hassan was raped. I think for Hassans' "father's" sake it was fair for Baba to keep the secret, just because that would have been degrading to him in a way and could have created a very awkward feeling in the house.

I don't agree with Jesse, because I don't understand how keeping that from Amir and Hassan protected them in any way. It anything it caused more problems, because it was as if Amir treated his brother as a servant.

Baba's decision about not telling his son that Hassan was his half brother was both good and bad. The reason that he should have told Amir is because it is the right thing to do. A person should always try to tell the truth no matter what. Amir is Baba's son and he deserves to know of his father's mistakes as well. The reason why it was good that Baba did not tell Amir about Hassan being his half brother was good for his protection. He would of thought that his family was not put together correctly. Pastunes are not meant to be mixed with the poor people. On the other hand in my opinion if he knew that Hassan was his half brother, the book would be completely different. i think that Amir would have helped Hassan in the alleyway and there would not be nearly as much conflict in the book that there was.

I think it was not a good idea because Baba had to think what will be happen if Hassan and Amir realized the truth. Hassan and Amir both of them will feel bad. Also they might doesn't believe Baba anymore because it will be big disappoint about him.

When i first knew about it i thought it was wrong, but if you think about it positively and say that Baba just wanted his friend Ali to have a baby boy or he wanted to help him because of the fact he is a Hazara and mix bloods and make him a little more respectful , but what i didnt understand was that he did not tell Ali even when he said he was going leave and at the time they both knew that they were never going to see each other again knowing that if he told Ali it might change the sad ending of Ali, Hassan, and his wife.

I believe that Baba ethically did the correct thing, which consist of keeping the truth away from Hassan. I'm pretty sure Baba thought about his decision every day, that is the reason why he treated them equally, loved, and cared for both of them. If Baba would have revealed this secret to anyone, he would have brung shame to all of his family and their life would have beome more difficult. The complications for amir now are huge because he has just figured out he did not help his brother when he needed him most and he ran him off, so that he and Baba could spend more time together. Amir now must go and reconcile with his brother but he finds out he is dead, which makes his guilt increase.

It was wrong not to tell him that Hassan was actually his step brother mainly even before he died, Baba didn't tell Amir that Hassan was his step brother. The main thing is that it makes it harder on Amir to hear someone else telling him that Hassan is actually his step brother and that Baba is Hassan's real father. Not only does this raise the shame that Amir feels of allowing Hassan to be raped, it also makes him believe that Baba didn't love him enough to tell him the truth of Hassan being his son as well Amir's step brother.

Well, I believe that it was right of Baba to keep this from Amir because it would have made their lives a lot more complicated. Although it is a horrible thing that Amir didn't know Hassan was his brother, because of their different classes their families would have been looked down on. I understand what Baba wanted to do. Baba wanted to protect his family and their name. On the other hand, if Baba had told Amir and Hassan they were brothers it would have chnaged the outcome of both of their lives and maybe in a more posivitive way in the long run.

i think that he did it because he was not sure how baba would have felt. he was allowed to withhold the information from them, but only becuase he was his father. also, if he had found out, he could have lost his reputation, and if he did not lose it, it would have been hurt really bad. he kept the secret so that people would not be able to gossip about it.

Obviously, we know that Baba's decision was wrong. He lied to his sons and his childhood friend. But if you think about it, he had too much to risk for the truth. He couldn't be know for having a hazara son. He can't face his best "friend" (servant) for betraying him and ultimately, he couldn't let his children know that he, himself, committed the greatest sin. It not only will affect his status, his reputation but also his family name. Hassan and Amir will also be affected. So maybe in his position, keeping the truth to himself might be the best decision.

I believe it was in the best interest for everybody, that Baba kept this a secret. You can say it is selfish that Baba kept this secret in order to preserve his reputation and friendship with Ali. In another sense though, this may have reduced the number of connections that Baba had that came in handy. Even though it was not “right” to keep the secret from Hassan and Amir that they were brothers, it was most likely for their own good. Baba proves to be a hypocrite after giving the speech to Amir about the greatest sin of all was theft. Amir is hurt by his father stealing the right to truth from him and it may have resulted in a different outcome in everybody’s life. Hassan might have come to America along with Ali, Amir and Baba. You could say that this lie cost Hassan’s life.
